So I totally agree that they’re setting up Cyclops as a villain. I know that because a dozen different characters have loudly said, “He’s losing control,” or, “The Phoenix is taking over”

But um…when has that happened exactly? The rest of the Phoenix 5, sure, they’ve lost control. Though this whole adoration thing for Emma seems to be out of left field. But as near as I can tell Cyclops hasn’t done any of that.

So Cyclops started the series off by telling Captain America, “No I don’t think I’ll let the head of a US Intelligence Agency kidnap my granddaughter out of my home, particularly as said home is technically considered a sovreign country at the moment, and a good chunk of your intelligence agency has tried to murder me and my family a dozen times in the last year or so alone.”

Then Cyclops spends the next chunk of the series fighting the Avengers who want to kidnap his granddaughter (and also mess with his best chance to undo the damage done by the Avenger who went crazy and nearly destroyed the world twice). Oh yeah, and the Avengers are listening to two “experts” on the X-men and the Phoenix who happen to be pissed at Cyclops and who quit because of that. Unbiased sources of advice there (oh, and to recruit those two Cap would have walked right by Rachel).

After Tony Stark tries to destroy a cosmic entity which has been described as the physical embodiment of life in the universe, Cyclops is suddenly a Phoenix avatar. You know, kind of like his 1st and 2nd wives, his daughter, and possibly one or both of his sons (all but one of whom used those powers to save the world/universe/multiverse). He then spends the next week or so fixing all those things he always promised to fix if he got the chance. Cap meanwhile gets pissy and leads a war against Cyclops because “he’s losing control!” Oh yeah, because the character who has appeared in the same panel with a Phoenix maybe a dozen times in the entire history of the Marvel Universe clearly knows better than the team that currently has four or five former Phoenix avatars on their active roster.

So then the Phoenix’s start to run into some problems. It clearly has nothing to do with the fact that the Avengers try to kill them every time they see each other. Also the four who lose it have all been villains at some point in their careers. But the fact that the X-men create a special prison to hold the incredibly superpowered people who keep trying to kill them, in a parallel dimension inhabited by creatures most folks would call demons is horrible! I’m glad Tony Stark never did anything like that to people.

Every time a Phoenix goes over the line however, they lose their powers. So if you do something too evil, the other Phoenixes get your powers. So Cyclops finds out where his runaway 16 yr old granddaughter is, and finds the group of people who are holding her with a cult that regularly sacrifices people to a dragon. So he goes to rescue her from them. TOTAL VILLAIN!

Kickstarter Project o’ the Week

The African-American Superhero Anthology

I have most of my eyesight back, so I’m here promoting a project that doesn’t explicitly involve lady creators (though I’m hoping they do reach out to African-American lady creators as well!)

Anyone who goes to the movies or turns on television knows that comic books have taken over pop culture. This summer alone, three superhero films adapted from comic books are hitting the big screen.

And that’s great, right? Well, yes … except for one big problem …

The vast majority of superheroes proliferating pop culture these days are NOT people of color.

And that’s because, even today, minorities are still in the minority when it comes to the world of comic books. And that means, tons of potential readers are not being served with stuff they might like.

The fact is, the world needs more heroes of color — so, we decided to create some!

Presenting: The African American Superhero Anthology.

Created by writer/editor Carlton Hargro, with art and stories by a host of artists and writers, The African American Superhero Anthology (aka “Super Black”) is designed to introduce a bevy of new and divergent heroes of color to the comic landscape.

But in order for The African American Superhero Anthology to become a reality, we need YOUR help….

  • The Anthology will be published as a 48-page, color, one-shot comic book.
  • It will feature four main stories — written and drawn by a number of creators. The comic will also feature full-page illustrations by several new and established artists and text pieces written by Carlton Hargro.
  • The vast majority of the characters featured in the Anthology are brand-new characters that have never been seen in published comic books before. (So, collectors should take note, this comic will feature a number of first appearances.)
  • Creators contributing work to the Anthology include: Writers Carlton Hargro and Darrick Hargro; artists John Hairston and Marcus Kiser; Image Comics writer/artist Jimmie Robinson and artist Antoine Williams (who drew pin-ups); and more to-be announced.

They only need $50 more to reach their goal, but why not make this project the next Womanthology?

This sounds like an AMAZING idea.  Please support it!

And people making the book, please let me know if I can help in any way, spreading the word or whatever!
